About
“Read 500 pages every day. That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it.” - Warren Buffett
“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” - Ben Franklin
"If you take Warren Buffett and watched him with a time clock, I would say half of all the time he spends is sitting on his ass and reading." - Charlie Munger
A few years back, I came across a speech by Charlie Munger, titled - A Lesson on Elementary, Worldly Wisdom as it Relates to Investment Management & Business. The key insight in this speech is that investing is a subset of the art of acquiring worldly wisdom. In other words, to be a good investor one must understand the workings of the world at large. This requires exposure to fields as varied as History, Geography, Politics, Economics, Finance, Psychology, Technology and many others.
Reading this speech opened up a whole new world for me, and completely altered my approach to investing. It also led me to other great books such as Seeking Wisdom: From Darwin to Munger by Peter Bevelin, and Investing: The Last Liberal Art by Robert Hagstrom. What I learnt is that to become a truly successful investor, one must read widely and deeply. My personal bookshelf is available here.
This blog is part of my ongoing effort to increase my stock of worldly wisdom. It is a personal quest which I hope will also benefit other like minded investors. Through this blog, I will curate a collection of interesting articles covering diverse topics. I will also write about any interesting insights I gain in my life and career, as they may be relevant to the art of accumulating worldly wisdom.
By doing this, I hope to gain a little bit of additional knowledge everyday, and let the magic of compounding do the rest. I hope to accumulate a library of mental models which can be applied in any situation. To paraphrase Charlie Munger, everyday I will try to - "Go to bed smarter than when I woke up". Hence, I am calling this blog: "Compounding Knowledge."
